In Italy, we celebrate Ferragosto on August 15th and it’s a catholic feast to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This is a public holiday and most museums, offices, shops, and restaurants are closed. Here is a list of the museums in Florence opened on Ferragosto. (updated in 2024)
State Museums open on Ferragosto in Florence
The Academy Gallery is going to be opened on August 15th from 8.50 am – 6.50 pm ; ticket office closes 30 minutes before closing time. The Uffizi Gallery is open August 15th from 8.15 am to 6.50 pm and the tickets office closes at 5.30 pm. On Tuesday 13th the museum will be open by night, closing at 9.50 pm.
San Marco Museum, preserving Beato Angelico’s masterpieces, is open on August 15th from 8.15 am to 1.50pm. The Bargello Museum, the new Orsanmichele Museum and the Medici Chapels are opened on Ferragosto – opening times here, as well as the Boboli Gardens and Pitti Palace main galleries with regular opening times.
Florence Civic and other Museums open on Ferragosto
The Civic museums in Florence opened on August 15th, Ferragosto day, are Palazzo Vecchio and Arnolfo Tower (until 2 pm), Museo del Novecento and Santa Maria Novella Museums. In addition to all these Palazzo Davanzati, the Archaeological Museum, and Palazzo Medici Riccardi are open.
Florence Cathedral will be closed for celebrations, Brunelleschi’s Cupola will be open only from 12.45 pm to 4.30 pm, while the Opera del Duomo Museum, the Baptistery and Giotto’s Bell Tower will be regularly open.
We strongly recommend you book tickets for Uffizi, Accademia, and Brunelleschi’s Cupola in advance because they’re busy attractions and waiting times can be long.
